My masonic heritage includes a brother, Robert Hayes (Chappell Lodge and the Scottish Rite at Scotts Bluff); my grandmother, Susie McMahon (Eastern Star), and my great grandfather, William McMahon (Iowa Mason).

I married Edith Prettyman in 1966. I have two children, Jason Hayes of Lincoln and Sara Hayes Niesyty of Denver; and four grandchildren.
I joined East Lincoln Lodge #210 in 2011, and served in the positions of Junior Deacon, Junior and Senior Wardens, and was the Worshipful Master in 2015. I joined the Scottish Rite in 2011 and am current Wise Master of the Rose Croix.
My interests include reading history and non-fiction, travel, art, and contemporary politics. My travels included taking students to Western Europe and Russia. My personal travel has included trips to Ireland, England, France, Italy, Jamaica, Belize, and Martinique.
I taught two years in Nebraska City and 36 years at Westside High School in Omaha. Since retirement I have taught History and Anthropology at Doane College-Lincoln, and subbed in the Lincoln Public Schools and the Westside Schools. I was the District I coordinator for We-The-People, and am the Treasurer for the Nebraska State Council for the Social Studies.
I was born in Chappell, Nebraska on July 20, 1944. I attended country school at District 24 near Chappell, Junior High at Ovid, Colorado, and high school in Chappell. I graduated from UNL with a BA degree in 1966, and from UNO with an MA degree in History in 1974. I was the Venerable Dean for Acacia Fraternity in 1965.
